in my case the workaround doesn't seem to work if I execute writer with

$ export GDK_CORE_DEVICE_EVENTS=1
$ lowriter

Other apps using GTK3 like firefox doesn't have this problem, even without
setting the GDK_CORE_DEVICE_EVENTS variable</pre>
