I'm using a file explorer which uses the DBUS tumbler service. This service
allows any plugin to create a thumbnail image for a specific file format. Next
the tumbler service provide this thumbnail to any application which require it
(any file explorer, ...).
The advantages of the tumber service is : it already manages an image cache and
DBUS integration.
It is used by XFCE and rely on a Gnome specification.
A lightweight implementation could extract the thumbnail which already exists
into the ODF file.
