The "--" thing is an explicit conversion, though, just like the "1*" is, unless
text variables have a uni-operator "-" that I'm not aware of.
"--" is actually a common way to convert texts to numbers, and is taught in a
lot of "Excel tips and tricks" kind of books.</pre>
