Looking at the help system for current version [1], I see that exactly the
solution I described *is* in fact documented (see descriptions of different
numbering types, and also description of field "Separator After", which
explicitly mentions the dot); instead, it's *your* way that lacks
documentation. So - again: you are welcome to file a bug report about
improvement of the help topic. Thanks.
