Calc clears the PRIMARY when you remove a selection. So you select some cells in Calc, and the PRIMARY gets updated, then remove that selection by clicking somewhere else or using the arrow keys and Calc clears the PRIMARY. Normally an app / your text editor wouldn't clear the PRIMARY, just replace it when something else is selected.
