<pre>So I installed the following build of version 1.14 of gstreamer from

gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad_1.14.1-1ubuntu1~ubuntu18.04.1_amd64.deb
and Impress now works.
It looks like the standard version of gstreamer installed with Ubuntu 18.04 is
the culprit. However I don't know if this build, being experimental, might
break something else.</pre>
