I don't like the idea of using thunderbird as a work around, it's not my MUA of choice (I don't like it's interface, threading ... and about 6 other things). Other work arounds could include exporting your caldav/cardav data into a postgres, sqlite, or mysql database - none of which fill me with excitement. I think that supporting the standard for cross platform sharing or contact and calendar information is a better way to go.
