I'm not a fan of changing the default behavior back and there. You see only your own problem now, but other users had a problem with exporting this color as MSO shading, because they could not change the character background when they opened the document in MSO. In MSO, shading is kinda hidden on the UI, while highlight tools is the obvious item to use for character background. So both options cause interoperability issues.
