<pre>FWIW, on a PC running Ubuntu 16.04 distrib, I experience the same thing when
building from master with gtk3 enabled and the default desktop environment
(Unity), or the Mate desktop environment.
If I switch to XFCE or Enlightenment, I get the menu back again.</pre>
