This is comparing current situation (when user saves "file.doc", gets "file.doc", sees it as "file", and in fact it's ODT) with saving "file.doc", getting "file.doc.odt", seeing "file.doc", which in fact is ODT. Personally I don't see a single drawback of the proposal *compared to the current situation*.
