Just in case someone reading this needs a workaround:
- define variable in an empty unused cell, use formatting without grouping
(thousand separator)
- set the text color of that cell to white, so this number does not get printed
- in the cell where the number is supposed to be shown, use a table reference
to the cell with the variable, format this cell with thousands separator, done</pre>
