<pre>Thank you for indicating that this was a deliberate design change, not a
regression or other bug. It looks like I will be left using 6.4 for the time
being.
While I note the discussion, it never appeared to me to be broken in 6.4 in a
way which required fixing (to a non-programmer). I agree with Mr Lehmann that
there are other alternatives. It is perhaps a little weird that the style and
formatting panel can be shrunk in 6.x in a way which causes the icons at the
top to disappear with no clue that they are hidden. Two rows as suggested would
be one alternative or perhaps a down-pointing black arrowhead might appear once
icons were hidden to show that there were hidden icons (as can happen to tray
icons in the windows taskbar, for example).</pre>
