I managed to get an old ‘broken’ mouse working long enough to try the "Background Colour" button's icon 30+ times with no problem, before the mouse died. The intermittent ‘bug’ still occurred with my current mouse, which otherwise seems to work fine. I suggest this bug report is closed. I will buy another USB mouse too see if the problem persists.
