It's certainly a problem that's happening in close position, but the phenomenon
is a bit different and it seems difficult to tell if it's related at this
point.

This issue points to character rotation, and <a class="bz_bug_link 
          bz_status_NEW "
   title="NEW - Vertical Japanese character strings are misaligned when exporting PDF."
   href="show_bug.cgi?id=144222">Bug 144222</a> points to character
placement.
Also, this issue occurs when printing, not PDF export.</pre>
