Tested using Mac OSX 10.9 with LibreOffice Version: 4.1.5.3
Build ID: 1c1366bba2ba2b554cd2ca4d87c06da81c05d24
I also can reproduce a major slowdown and freezes. Also I can reproduce
the fact the second pasted image removes the page break.

Confirmed, in 4.2.3.3 the page break retains.

Not sure this is already reported, but I'm not sure reporting a bug for
LibreOffice 4.1-branch is worth it. If we find/bibisect the commit that
fixed this issue, it may not be backportable to upcoming EOL version 4.1.6.
Also it _might_ be fixed thanks to the fix of bug 52547
(https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52547)
Kind regards,
