From kelemeng at ubuntu.com Thu Dec 2 10:49:23 2021 From: kelemeng at ubuntu.com (Gabor Kelemen) Date: Thu, 2 Dec 2021 11:49:23 +0100 Subject: [Libreoffice-qa] Request for QA check: webdav-curl Message-ID: Hi all Recently the webdav-curl backend was made the default for accessing remote fileshares via WebDAV protocol, thanks to the work of Michael Stahl. I'd like to ask for a bit of QA on it: add a new connection in the Remote Files dialog using the WebDAV protocol and try to use it for opening & saving files from/to remote servers. Initial testing was done using Apache HTTPD with webdav, NextCloud and SharePoint (2016). It would be great to test the options offered by the Remote Files dialog with other groupware server environments, also possibly with ones supporting file locking. When testing with debug build it is worth starting LO with: SAL_LOG="+RELATIVETIMER+INFO.ucb.ucp.webdav+WARN" Please add any problems to meta bug 117073 Thanks in advance! Please keep in mind that product pitches are not allowed at FOSDEM. The length of talks is limited to a maximum of 25 minutes, as we would like to have some minutes for questions after each presentation, and to fit as many presenters as possible in the schedule. Exceptions must be explicitly requested and justified. You may be assigned LESS time than you have requested. IMPORTANT INFORMATIONS - Presentations have to be pre-recorded and tested for streaming before the event. - Once your talk is pre-recorded, and approved by a reviewer in term of quality for streaming, it will have to be uploaded by January 23, to be prepared and ready for broadcast (the deadline cannot be moved further). - During the stream of talks, speakers must be available online for the Q/A session. TALK SUBMISSIONS All talk submissions have to be made in the Pentabarf event planning tool: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM22. While filing the proposal, please provide the title of your talk, a short abstract (one or two paragraphs), some information about yourself (name, bio and photo, but please do remember that your profile might be already stored in Pentabarf). To submit your talk, click on ?Create Event? and select the ?LibreOffice Technology? DevRoom as the ?Track?. Otherwise, your talk will not be even considered for any devroom at all. If you already have a Pentabarf account from a previous year, even if your talk was not accepted, please reuse it. Create an account if, and only if, you don?t have one from a previous year. If you have any issues with Pentabarf, please get in touch with the DevRoom manager. (Heiko) + the experience was: many users were too outdated (Thorsten) + can tell from updater stats, bugzilla + part of the reason is it's not easy to update + not great for security + c++ project, 200M users + auto-update without users having to do anything + vulnerable after 2 years still + some users use old versions intentionally (Heiko) + some users are still on XP, let's not follow that pattern (Thorsten) + could also have a config option to disable auto-update (Kendy) + the tender idea started when app stores were less mature + moving to rolling releases is not possible without this (Xisco) + Chrome auto-updater is open source (Hossein) + and it is still using / working with MSI (Kendy) + unlike mozilla (Miklos) + what to decide here? (Miklos) + is this still desirable? (Florian) + put it to the ranking sheet for 2022? (Miklos) + what helps the board: split the idea to per-platform packages? (Thorsten) + e.g. go the app-store way on Windows/macOS + if the project is too large, then easier to do 2 other smaller projects + the ESC recommended this project the last year, do we still recommend it? (Miklos) + or reduce the scope: auto-download but run the installer manually? (Cloph) + "yes, valid proposal, but take app-store discussion into account"? I have agreed with the FOSDEM team that if we will get more talks that we can fit on Sunday we can start the devroom the day before (to show that we are able to provide more contents than Apache OpenOffice). I don't think I need to attend the ESC to support the call for papers (but if you think that being there would help, I am happy to join). At the moment, there are only three talks submitted, which are definitely not enough for a decent devroom (we are at AOO level... and this is unpleasant). Everyone is invited to submit a talk, preferably with a technical angle, related to advocacy of ODF or LibreOffice Technology. I will try to be a good example by submitting three talks for the LibreOffice Technology DevRoom ("Advantages of LibreOffice Technology", "Why ODF is a better standard than OOXML", and "LibreOffice 7.3 New Features"), one talk for the Legal DevRoom ("Why the pandemic could help FOSS, but was a win for proprietary software"), and one talk for FOSDEM Main Track ("Strategies and tactics to make a community managed FOSS project sustainable in the medium to long term"). Promoting ODF and LibreOffice Technology is one of my tasks, but I can't be alone in doing so. Looking forward to your contributions.
