I added that small box with <, = and > to have a small visual hint that
it's conditional. I guess it could be removed, but I don't see why that
would be neccessary, since it still conveys that clicking the main part
of the button will open the color scale dialog.
I think adding icons lets one recognize the different option more
quickly and it would be consistent with the icons in menus, which are
enabled by default now.
