So I see two parts here:
1) A request to improve the interface
2) Some hard-to-reproduce bugs (?) that are related

I'm going to toss this one over to the UX Team to review. Perhaps we can
separate-out parts (1) and (2), or at least make some progress on the parts
that are actionable.
