Here is a possible suggestion that will retain the clean & navigable UI. When i
move my mouse over the entries in the left column for 2 or more seconds, it
disable/dim all the non-related documents. It will enable all the documents
again if the mouse returns again within the left column.

I agree with you that if i am in writer and open up the recent documents list,
it shouldnt be showing me non-text document files.
