LibreOffice Writer Toolbar Button Usage Statistics

As a long time ms word user since word 6.0, though i didnt use versions after
ms office xp until joining the QA team, i've always enjoyed using the button
toolbars. The only negative thing has been that the 2 default toolbars havent
been customized to better suit the vast majority of users, which for me is
easily noticable as the toolbars doesnt have a button for 'insert image'. I am
aware that it is available in the drawing toolbar, but i dont think that most
users would associate clicking a tooltip named 'Show Drawing Functions' with
the ability to add an image. So presently, 86% of users are going into the menu
(Insert > Image > From File) in order to add an image into their documents,
which to me is quite sad, as most documents will have a image in it and
inserting an image is the second highest inserted element in a document. Its so
important in a document, that its the only element used in the writer icon,
excluding the text.

So it is my intention to present a proposal of a customized default toolbars
that will contain as many useful buttons as possible, in order to reduce the
need for most users to have to go into menus. I hope that in the future, that
the sidebar will be improved enough that it could eliminate the use of the
toolbars (similar to Calligra Words) for users who wish to do so, but
unfortunately the sidebar isnt presently even able to remove the formatting
toolbar, as it doesnt have a style drop down menu [bug 73071].

I have utilizing statistics gathered from OpenOffice.org 3.1 Usage Data <
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Tracking_results > that was done in 2009,
along with the assistance of the most used features used in bug reports that i
worked on for the QA team, as well as useful input from Thibaut Brandscheid and
other QA team members in order to come up with this proposal.

The proposal will be broken up into sections, with each section being submitted
as a comment, so that interested individuals have time to comment on each step.
Below are the various steps i plans to submit for this proposal in upcoming
comments.

Step 1 - Removal of less used button entries
Step 2 - Grouping similar items together
Step 3 - Addition of buttons of highly used features
Step 4 - Suggestion of new UI elements

To begin the process, i have attached the statistics of the standard and
formatting toolbars, showing a comparison of how much each button is used
comparing to other buttons in the toolbar, as well as a comparison of how much
the button is used in relationship to its menu bar entry, keyboard shortcut and
context menu entry. I've included comments to further explain things, when
things werent as straight forward as i would have hoped. I look forward to any
suggestions to the improvement of this data.

I'm hoping this proposal will find its way into the 4.4 or 5.0 release, and
hope the same for my print preview proposal [bug 80838].

Note: For those looking to look over the raw OOo usage data, Astron had
uploaded it to <
