Feature exists since LO 4.1, see bug 47011:
Tools->Options -> Load/Save -> General -> Save -> "Automatically save the
document too"
Of course you're still going to lose the work you did since the last
auto-save (up to 15 minutes by default), but i'd claim that's good
enough in case of user error.
