No, it is Resolved Fixed that there will be no GUI based control for this.
Rather it is deemed a rarely used configuration that belongs in Expert
configuration.

Tools -> Options -> Advanced: Expert Configuration

Thumbnails are not generated when RecentDocsThumbnail value is set false, the
count of Thumbnails/documents listed is set by History "PickListSize"

In Expert Configuration search for "RecentDocsThumbnail" click edit to toggle
true|false.  And also to not have any icons/previews search for and set
"PickListSize" to 0 from its default of 25.
