Don't think it's a UX flaw. When styles work as expected, like in Writer, the
properties get applied and become visible. If the interaction is unclear it
helps to have the default action 'Apply' as first entry in the context menu (as
it is defined in the HIG).

But I believe styles are just buggy/misconcepted in Impress. We had a
discussion regarding master vs. style in bug 102302.
