I don't see any alternative to how it's handled in Writer, meaning to reduce
the width of all columns. 

On the other hand, how many columns fit nicely into the table depend on the
screen/app size. With a reasonable large width you can have 10 columns without
any problem. As the table is floating in a frame it's possible to place it at
the right edge of the slide, which makes no sense but contradicts all
countermeasures.

Balancing the options my take is WONTFIX.
