This used to be the case in OpenOffice.org. It was then changed in LO to hold
the data in a data table. I don't know the exact reasons for this, but I guess
it's so that you can copy the chart anywhere (Writer, Impress) and not lose the
data.
When thinking about further improvements, we need to consider this.
