This has been by design since OpenOffice.org 1.0.
The content of a table cell in Writer is made up of one or more paragraphs.
When a user chooses to clear the style formatting of one or more paragraphs,
those paragraphs are switched to the root (Default) paragraph style formatting.
This applies to _ALL_ paragraph styles in Writer.
NOT A BUG.
