Probably this is "The underlying issue is that the table can't be deleted if
the table cells are selected."

That means, the way to properly select/deselect such object as a table is plain
wrong.
In most cases, users expect that clicking on the frame selects the object as a
whole. If one wants to select the contents of the table, it's usually "drag
over table cells" operation.

And even then, it would be reasonable to delete the table if user selects EMPTY
table and hits DEL.
This way, one could remove the table by using DEL two times (first one deletes
contents, second one deletes table).
Now it's really tricky to "properly" select it. It's not intuitive at all. No
amount of manuals will fix that, users should not have to read manuals to use
simple GUI based tool, and for such a simple operation as removing an embedded
object from a document.
