To answer Thomas' questions:
+ What should be the default behavior?
+ start with character, revert per character
+ Where should this setting be changeable?

+ all or nothing
The point here is probably not primarily the keyboard (works well with
shift+ctrl) but selection per cursor (mouse, touchpad etc.). It's known on
Windows but would be rather disturbing on Linux.
