So, like I told Heiko, that literally means there's an implicit Character style
within each Paragraph style... sans the name the "formal recognition". After
all, what is the definition of a Character style if not its set of properties,
plus its name/identifier?

Ok, that just means that there are implicit PS-default CS'es in the ODF format
as well. You are right that "recognizing" them in ODF is much more big of a
deal than "recognizing" them in the UI.

Actually I'd say it's more the opposite of what you conclude. That is, it's
true that for a PS, all character properties are defined directly or via
inheritance. But when a character property is defined via the PS inheritance
tree - that is the case of the implicit character style having that property
undefined. And like with every CS - when you apply it, whatever is undefined
becomes defined using PS inheritance.
