I believe that strings appear on the left of the cell, and numbers of the
correct format on the right. This is plenty of feed back that the string is
unchanged to the number format. Also, the string values will not sort properly
with the rest of the date column, which is even more feedback that something is
missing. I don't think there needs to be any extra messages to this effect.
