Indeed, this would be acceptable UX-wise.
Foo (12) = (COUNTIF(<RANGE>,"Foo")
Bar (276)
Baz (3)
Very long... (42)
Added the brackets to more clearly indicate the count, not necessarily a good
idea. And ellipsis to cover for long names.
Question is if such pre-processing is cheap or has serious impact on
performance.

1,1,1,2,2,2...,10,20,30...100 shows 10..100 with TOP10 not 1,2... with the
highest rank. An alternative to your idea could be to have RANK10 that filters
for the highest countif() items.
