Heiko,
This "desired feature" is not desired by me.  The default numbered list style
should only only affect the list I highlight and no other list.  It's not
intuitive to me that other lists in other sections that I don't highlight
should be affected!  The burden then is up to me if my numbering action had
this unwanted side effect.

I don't want to have to create new styles to overcome unintuitive behaviors of
default styles.
