>From what I can see in a quick test, setting the "Accessibility" -> "Options
for High Contrast Appearence" -> "High Contrast" option to "Enable" results in
Calc selection being displayed the same way as setting the mentioned expert
setting:

(and might possibly do more in addition, didn't look into it in more detail
