With KDE, a rectangle surrounds the X upon hover and a tooltip appears "Close
infobar". Same on Windows. The hitbox is clearly larger than the X.

With gtk3, there is no rectangle, but the tooltip appears.

Didn't test on Wayland yet, but with X11 the X is twice as large as in your
screenshot.
