You can disable the thumbnail views with the boolean stanza
'RecentDocsThumbnail' Tools -> Options -> Advanced 'Open Expert Configuration'

Enter RecetnDocsThumbnail on the search bar.

Use the Edit button to toggle it from default True to disabled False.

That will use generic placeholder icons as the thumbnails. The MRU listing will
continue to be listed on the backing pane the Start Center uses.

For privacy, that is the handling of any encrypted ODF document, just a generic
icon.

You can also set your MRU list length to '0' (Expert Configuration
'PickListSize') to open the Start Center empty, but you'll loose your MRU.

As to removing the MRU history from the Start Center, that is not appealing as
the size of the Start Center is the initial launch size for each of the
modules. And past discussions to show just the side bar of controls without the
empty space for the thumbnails was rejected.
