If I were relying on the sidebar, I wouldn't be adding this control to a
toolbar.

The control already exists. Given that it does, it should be more reasonable. A
spinner control is not what I believe users would expect for line thickness.
And the mini-dialog already exists - it can be adapted from the sidebar line
width control; so not that much coding effort.
