I've added the information I have - seems that the redesign of the slide
sorter(s) in the Renaissance project made the names disappear. Pointers
to bug and spec in the comment:

What I've additionally noticed is that there is a mouseover (tool tipp)
showing the name of the current slide. And of course, we don't talk
about the slide pane only - its also related to the slide sorter.
