OK, I've sussed it.

The path to provide is :

"/usr/local/mysql/"

or

"/usr/local/mysql-5.1.50-osx10.6-x86_64/"


However, the configure.in script needs modifying at line 4737 to tell it
to look for libmysqlclient.dylib. I have enclosed a diff patch that
shows this change.
