[REVIEW 3-6] Fix for fdo#53089

while making sure that

and

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43109

remain fixed.

The highlight of this commit is

1) revert my original "fix" for fdo#43109 and Eike's subsequent fix for 
fdo#52205, and

2) fix fdo#43109 the right way (such that it won't introduce fdo#53089).

I've added 3 new unit tests for this (on master), one for each bug. 
They all pass.
