I agree with your observations and thing your approach might help.

The longrunning tests are the likely unoapi tests. The OOoRunner is build here:

 http://opengrok.libreoffice.org/xref/core/qadevOOo/Jar_OOoRunner.mk

and the tests that are run by one instance are listed in:

 MODULE/qa/unoapi/MODULE.sce

so splitting one slow *.sce into multiple ones should help here.
