Patch Set 1: Abandoned

Eike Rathke is right. This patch introduces a performance regression and this is not acceptable. Anyway, there is a merge conflict and fixing it was not worth the effort since this is only a minor rewrite. The goal was to do a firts timer job in the code base before doing a more in depth contribution. So I am going to the next step :)
