First - thanks for your patch ! :-) it's great to try to clean the code
up.

Sadly (as David says) it seems you're rather ahead of your time - on
the cutting edge of last year's compiler technology ;-) Meanwhile we
unfortunately have to ship and compile the beastie with 5x year old
compilers on various platforms - which is a shame.
Of course, luckily we still have lots of C++ that was written for 20
year old compilers ;-) so there is plenty of scope for cleaning up to a
much more recent base - so be not discouraged ! :-)
Is there an area you're particularly interested in hacking in or bug
you're particularly annoyed by ? or is cleanup your thing ?
