Building LODE on Mac fails with "Too many open files"

That was indeed the case, thanks for the hint, Norbert.  I fixed that, then I added "--disable-firebird-sdbc” to autogen.input. Eventually, I got the following error:

[...]/lode/dev/core/sw/qa/extras/ooxmlimport/ooxmlimport.cxx:1202: Assertion

Failures !!!
Run: 217   Failure total: 1   Failures: 1   Errors: 0
