this should be fixed on master with commit
68d7faae7d748b6adcf8ba71a5b7ec9d80031c1b

(here "fixed" means you'll get an error message from configure instead
that tells you to install gettext)

(how one would best install gettext on MacOS is another question that i
don't know the answer to; perhaps via LODE ?)
