Just as a test, I asked him to try manually creating and catting the 
file and there was no problem:

$ echo 
'X5O!P%@AP@<:@4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*' > 
$LODE_HOME/dev/core/eicar

$ cat $LODE_HOME/dev/core/eicar
X5O!P%@AP@<:@4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
