Fonts rendered more blurry from 24.2.7.2 -> 24.8.0.1 with libcairo 2.18.x

I can't see any meaningful diffs in LibreOffice itself in a
libreoffice-24-8 branch vs libreoffice-24-2 in the sort of places where
I might expect something to make a difference.
e.g.
git diff libreoffice-24-2 vcl/unx/generic/
or
git diff libreoffice-24-2 vcl/headless/

so, to pursue this, it might be useful to self-build cairo from its git
repo and double check that using the cairo 1.16 tag rendering is as
wanted while 1.18 is not and then git bisect cairo itself to see if
there is an identifiable change there may have triggered the behaviour.
