As an alternative to joining and contributing to Libreoffice you could consider
also contributing to the RefPerSys inference engine project. (GPL licensed, C++
code, on github).

And there is even a possibility to mix the two open source projects. For example
RefPerSys could be used within Libreoffice to check grammar or spelling of a
given document paragraph in Libreoffice.

Notice that RefPerSys is a lot smaller than Libreoffice is.
