So I would have to snag a non-stock set of .deb files or build my own .deb 
files, from the source... I wonder what sort of dependency hell that would 
entail...

Do the Ubuntu maintainers know about this?  Are there plans to back-port the 
changes to LightDM for the version shipped with 14.04 or package a newer 
version of LightDM for 14.04?  In many ways, this is a somewhat serious bug.  
Has one been filed under Ubuntu?  I know there is one under LightDM, but 
unless the Ubuntu package maintainers get involved, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will 
continue to be 'broken'?
