GDM has been around longer than LightDM, so GNOME has just never switched
away from it. GDM evolved from XDM to be GNOME specific and then was
rewritten (all before LightDM). The hope was GNOME would use LightDM, but
this has not (yet?) occurred.

At the moment there are no major features missing. So I don't expect a
significant amount of work needed in the near future.

There's always bug fixes, and dependency changes and new features that may
come up in the future. I wanted to make clear these are all good things and
I don't want anyone to have to wait for me for these to be done.
