The command stream error also happens with git master.

Taking a slightly different tack, I have tried to narrow down which desktop
effects cause the failure.  Many work just fine, e.g., basic compositing,
translucency, thumbnails.  It seems that effects that distort windows such as
"wobbly windows" and "magic lamp" trigger the problem.

If I disable those effects, the unpatched Fedora package also works for me.
